BHP and the Universe Verse

BHP Team

BHP teamed up with author James Dunbar to bring the Universe Verse to the Big History curriculum. Here’s what James had to say about his work:

The Universe Verse is a rhyming graphic guide to Big History that explains most of the major milestones in the history of existence, from the Big Bang to the scientific method. It consists of 90 pages of comic book illustrations and rhyming verse that cover the 8 major thresholds of Big History with considerable depth and detail, given that the entire thing can be read in under an hour.

The complete book will be available for free download for the month of December. Visit http://www.JLDunbar.com to get your copy of the PDF ebook.

I created this book because I believe public understanding and appreciation of science is one of the most powerful tools we have for tackling the many problems that await us. Furthermore, Big History is a testament to the deep interconnectedness of humanity and all life on Earth, and provides a logical foundation for the compassion and empathy that is even more important for global happiness than our scientific knowledge and engineering abilities.

That’s why I wanted to make a version of Big History that would be accessible and engaging for a broad audience, including young children who are still forming their preferences and identities.

I was able to create this book thanks to some exciting new tools that are helping to make publishing more accessible to creators. These are tools which could certainly be used by students, teachers, classrooms and schools. I used Createspace for low volume print-on-demand publishing and I used Kickstarter for crowd-funding.

The Universe Verse is available as a hardcover at http://www.JLDunbar.com, on Amazon, and in select stores. If you’d like to learn more, please get in touch: dunbarjam@gmail.com.
