This month, our big question is: How Do Minerals Make Our Planet Unique? We dig through the strata in a BHP content article blog post that links to a new, rockin’ activity you can add to your lesson repertoire.

In this activity, students explore the co-evolution of rocks and life on Earth. There’s some interdisciplinarity thrown in there, too, with an exploration of the evolving relationship between biology and geology. Students will read an article exploring how minerals (which combine to form rocks) contributed to the development of life, and how life, in turn, contributed to the mineral diversity we enjoy today. The key events of this story tie nicely to the Big History narrative, so this activity represents a great opportunity to reinforce the BHP curriculum and thresholds students have learned about so far!

Students will Process Read “How Do Minerals Make Our Planet Unique?” using the Three Close Reads approach. After they’ve read the article, they’ll use the worksheet to organize, draw, or somehow represent the key events of the article. Think: comic book meets timeline! Check out some excellent student examples below (click on the image for a larger view).
