Driving Question: What is Big History?

  • Big History is probably a bit different than any other history course you’ve taken. It covers a much larger chunk of history—in fact, we cover all of it! Think about how this large scale compares to other history courses you’ve taken. How is what we learn in Big History the same, and how is it different?

Word of the Day: Interdisciplinary

  • This course is interdisciplinary—an approach to a subject that uses the viewpoints of many different kinds of scholars about the same topic. For instance, Big History relies on information from cosmologists, astrophysicists, geologists, chemists, paleontologists, biologists, anthropologists, and historians, as well as experts in other disciplines, to learn about the past.

  • Go watch the “What is Big History?” video on Khan Academy, where David Christian provides an overview of the 13.8 billion-year timeline we study in the Big History course and tells us why we need an interdisciplinary approach to capture the whole story.

  • The past informs the future, which is precisely why we study history.
  • Search for a news article about the current coronavirus pandemic, and use it to answer the following prompts.
    • Describe how it affects the world now, and how you think it will impact the world in 25 years and in 100 years.
    • Explain the top three changes to our world resulting from this problem now, in 25 years, and in 100 years.
    • Most importantly, explain why these changes make sense.
